Delhi, NY - The SUNY Delhi softball team was back in action Saturday evening for a conference doubleheader rematch against the Fighting Tigers of Cobleskill.
In game one, Delhi would jump all over starting pitcher Gabriella Wendelken, plating five runs in the bottom of the first inning. First-year Stephanie Huckabee would open the scoring with an RBI double to left field to take an early 1-0 lead. Junior Riley Martin would step to the plate with the bases loaded, looking to return a favor. Cobleskill, fresh off a first-inning grand slam in their last meeting, Martin would do just that, sending one over the fence in left field to give the Broncos a 5-0 lead. It wouldn't take long for the Tigers to respond, scoring six runs of their own in the next frame to regain the lead. The Tigers would never look back, adding runs in the three innings that followed to earn the 13-5 victory.
In game two, the Broncos would strike first again; sophomore Carolina Watson kicked things off with an RBI double down the right field line, scoring Stephanie Huckabee. Sophomore Hannah Caughey would follow with a sac fly to give the Broncos an early 2-0 lead. The Tigers would eventually break through in the third inning, headlined by a pair of RBI doubles from Kylie Rattigan and Mackenzie Wendelken. The big innings would be a frequent occurrence for the Tigers, recording another six-run inning to gain control of the contest. First-year Brianna May would provide Delhi with three strong innings in relief to keep the Broncos in striking distance. Riley Martin and Carolina Watson's success at the plate would continue. Martin would add an RBI single, her fifth RBI of the day, while Watson would follow with an RBI single of her own to cut the deficit to 6-4. The Tigers would add three runs in the sixth inning, essentially putting the game out of reach. Cobleskill would collect the 10-6 result, earning the sweep.
The Broncos fall to 6-12, 0-4 in conference play, and will be back in action Monday for a home doubleheader against Lehman.
