NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Delhi Broncos Softball team opened up their season with a triple header Saturday, facing Mass. Maritime and Wilson College to kick off their 2026 campaign after rainouts cancelled one Friday contest and postponed the other.
Game 1 vs. Mass. Maritime
Angelina Dickel put the first run of the year on the board for the Broncos, stealing home in the bottom of the first on a double steal to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead after the first frame. This lead would not last long, as the Buccaneers would tie the game in the second and take a three-run lead in the top of the third. Grace Sperry answered with an RBI triple to score Carolina Bernard in the bottom of the third, but Bucs pitcher Jennamarie Klemp settled in to give MMA seven innings pitched, recording a strikeout in the process and shutting down Delhi's offense for the rest of the contest.
Alethea Ferrara took the bump for the Broncos, pitching three innings and giving up six hits and four earned runs. Mikayla Wright came in in relief, giving the Broncos four innings pitched with only one earned run.
Game 2 vs. Wilson
The Broncos found themselves in a 5-1 hole at the end of the first inning in game two that they were never able to climb out of. Dickel got the nod on the mound for Delhi and after a tough first inning, found her groove to record three consecutive scoreless frames. The Bronco offense struggled to generate any run support through this time, also going scoreless for these three innings. Then in the fifth things got rolling for both teams, with Dickel coming across the dish on an error by the Pheonix and Stephanie Huckabee notching an RBI single to score Jaden Taylor for the Broncos, cutting the Wilson lead to three before an onslaught of offense in the bottom of the inning put the game away.
Huckabee finished the game with a pair of hits and Taylor came around to score twice in the effort. Dickel went four innings pitched allowing 10 hits and eight earned runs, with Lauren Laferriere taking over in relief for the last five batters. Katelyn Keller put in a two hit, two RBI, and two run performance for the Pheonix.
Game 3 vs. Wilson
Wilson once again came out the gates hot in the third game, scoring 10 runs in the first three innings. Adrienne Neff tallied the lone RBI for the Broncos in the fourth bringing around pinch-runner Natalie Amadon, before two more Wilson runs and a scoreless bottom of the fifth sealed the deal.
Huckabee and Riley Martin finished game three with two hits a piece, with Carolina Watson, Samantha Martin, and Julian Ponce all tallying a hit. Wright started the game in the circle for Delhi, going one and a third innings before Ferrara entered in relief, managing four strikeouts in her second stint of the day.
The Broncos have a day off before returning to action on Monday, when they will face Waynesburg and Grove City at 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. respectively.
