NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Delhi Broncos Softball team went 0-2 on day two of spring training games, dropping an 8-3 decision against Waynesburg before taking Grove City to extra innings, where they would fall 3-2.
Game One vs. Waynesburg
Once again Delhi found themselves down big early after a 6-0 first inning in favor of Waynesburg, whose bats were hot early. From there the game settled down, as the teams traded two runs in the third behind Cayla Moroni and Riley Martin RBIs for the Broncos and Madie Cicero for the Yellow Jackets, who batted in a run and then came around to score. Samantha Martin scored the final run of the game in the top of the fifth on a throwing error after being moved over on a sacrifice bunt by Moroni.
Mikayla Wright got the nod as the Broncos' starting pitcher, managing 4.2 innings pitched while surrendering 13 hits and 8 earned runs, with six of those hits and runs coming in the first inning before she bounced back strong for the middle innings. Angelina Dickel came in in relief to give 1.1 scoreless innings, and Emily Pratt dealt all seven innings for Waynesburg with four strikeouts while only giving up two earned runs. Cicero tallied three RBIs in the win.
Game Two vs. Grove City
Dickel returned to the mound for game two and delivered a gem, going 8.0 innings while letting up 11 hits and two earned runs in a defensive battle. The Wolverines pounced first on a Sydney Shay RBI single in the third and again in the fifth when Noel Anthony batted in Sydney McBride. The momentum shifted to the Broncos in the sixth behind a Riley Martin RBI sac fly, and with their backs against the wall in the 7th inning, Taylor Myers laid down a sacrifice bunt that with the help of a throwing error by Grove City scored Samantha Martin from second base to tie the game with no outs. Delhi would go the rest of the inning with runners on second and third, but were unable to convert, forcing extra innings. With two outs on the board Alexis Jackson hit a go-ahead RBI double in the gap in left-center field for the Yellow Jackets, and the Broncos were inable to answer in the bottom of the inning.
On top of her strong outing Dickel also recorded a triple in a critical moment in the sixth inning that allowed her to score the tying run. Martin recorded the lone RBI for the Broncos.
