North Myrtle Beach, S.C. - The Delhi Broncos Women's Softball team wrapped up their trip to South Carolina dropping a pair against St. Elizabeth and Wilkes by scores of 9-1 and 7-0, respectively, on Tuesday. With the losses the Broncos head back north with a record of 0-7.
Game 1 vs. Saint Elizabeth
The Broncos opened the day by taking their first lead of the year as Carolina Bernard doubled down the line to bring in Riley Martin. The score held firm at 1-0 in favor of Delhi until the bottom of the fourth when St. Elizabeth exploded for four runs, including a two RBI double from Leidy Soto leyba. From there the Eagles would gradually increase their lead, adding one run in the fourth, two in the fifth, and ending the game in the sixth when two runners came around on a fielding error by the Broncos.
The Broncos received four pitching stints from three different pitchers, as Alethea Ferrara started and ended the game on the mound with appearances from Mikayla Wright and Lauren Laferriere in between. Ferrara totaled 3.2 innings dealt giving up six runs, five earned, four walks and two strikeouts. Wright managed 1.2 innings with three earned runs, and Laferriere did not record an out in the three batters she faced. Kami DeGaetani went all six innings while only giving up one earned run in her first win of the year. Adrienne Neff was the only Bronco to tally multiple hits, and Vanwinkle recorded a game-high four RBIs for Saint Elizabeth.
Game 2 vs. Wilkes
It looked like Wilkes was going to put game two away early as Ally Stafursky opened the game with a lead-off triple and Maddy Maloney singled to bring her in, before a throwing error would score Maloney before an out was on the board. Delhi would escape with the two run deficit and keep it that way until the fourth when Paige Randazzo and Samantha Petersen tallied an RBI apiece to double the Wilkes lead to four. The Colonels continued the damage in the seventh on a bases-loaded RBI sacrifice fly by Maloney, followed by an Abby Williams two-RBI single to extend the lead to 7-0.
Angelina Dickel had another strong performance on the mound, tossing all seven innings while allowing three earned runs and striking out a Colonel in the process while Jaden Taylor and Ferrara nabbed a pair of hits each. Tessa Stafursky recorded the complete game shutout for Wilkes with five strikeouts.
The Broncos look ahead to March 11th when they return to action hosting Hartwick for a double header, with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
